Hypocrisy For Fun and Profit

By Larry Barkan

Sometimes, the hypocrisy is breath taking.

The phone number of David Vitter, "family values" advocate and Louisiana Senator, appeared in the address book of the "D.C. Madam" who was accused of running a prostitution ring.

In September, 2007, Vitter "earmarked" (that is, proposed giving) $100,000 in federal money for a Christian group, the Louisiana Family Forum, known for challenging the teaching of evolution. God bless him.

George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist who co-founded the conservative Family Research Council, was caught returning from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort he found on "Rentboy.com."

But please don't judge poor George. According to him, he had a bad back and had hired the "escort" to carry his luggage for him.

William Bennett, one time Secretary of Education, frequent guest on the Sunday morning talk shows and, currently, the host of the weekday radio program "Morning in America" originating in Dallas, Texas is known for his very conservative views, most of which can be found in his books. One of those books is called, "The De-Valuing of America: The Fight for Our Culture and Our Children" (1992).

Not mentioned in the book (perhaps it wasn't part of "The Fight For Our Culture and Our Children") is that Bennett was a high-stakes gambler who reportedly had lost millions of dollars in Las Vegas.

Or perhaps America wasn't actually being "devalued" by Bennett's comment on his radio program in September of 2005 that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but the crime rate would go down."

I'm sure some of his best friends are African Americans.

As, I'm sure, is true for Rand Paul, current Republican candidate for the Senate in Kentucky who, while finding discrimination "reprehensible" would not favor a law preventing restaurant owners from serving black people.

Why not, Paul might respond, we already have signs denying service to those without shoes or shirts.

But what if Black people happen to be fully clothed. What then?

And then there's:

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, famous for his denunciation of our tax system, being ordered to pay a $300,000 ethics penalty in an investigation over misuse of tax-exempt funds.

And Mark Sanford, current (and outgoing) Governor of South Carolina. Sanford supported the impeachment of Bill Clinton who, you will remember, questioned the meaning of the word "is." Sanford learned well from Clinton, having used "hiking the Appalachian trail" as a euphemism for extramarital sex.

And Mark Souder, Congressman from Indiana's 3rd district who resigned this year after being caught in an extramarital affair. Would it be impolite to mention that Souder supports teaching children in sex education classes that it's wrong to have sex outside of marriage?

And Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, who is currently earning big bucks on the lecture circuit lecturing teenagers on the importance of postponing having sex until they are married. Her daughter, born out of wedlock, travels with her.

In these troubling economic times, it's comforting to know we can always turn to our public figures to sustain us.

I have been an author, motivational speaker and business consultant since 1984. I have three passions: The first is my wife of 37 years. The second is challenging conventional wisdom. The third is dogs and their welfare. I am the author of "Everyone Wins! Playing The Game of Conflict Resolution In All Your Relationships" as well as "Present and Persuade: Create Talks and Speeches That Capture Hearts and Change Minds."

What's wrong with challenging the teaching of evolution?

theoldcoot Jun 23, 2010 11:35
@ theoldcoot - I don't think he was commenting on whether it's right or wrong to teach evolution. He was just saying that it's hypocritical of the Senator to promote Christian values and yet turn around and use a prostitute.

Perhaps it all points to the theory that the things we hate the most about others, the things we rant on the most, are often the things about ourselves that we wish to disown.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Very true. Although it's more fun to just rant. Thanks for the comment.

You missed a few but then there is a limit on how long an Intel can be. (I think)

Yes, I could have gone on and on and on and...Thanks for commenting. You always make me smile.

Larry it's 3:15 in the morning. Don't you ever sleep?

Reminds me of the scripture: "Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are, if you judge; for in the thing in which you judge another, you condemn yourself, inasmuch as you that judge practice the same things." (Rom. 2:1)
