Political Candidates: Vote For Me. I look Good
By Larry Barkan
John Rogers (not his real name) is running for Judge of the Circuit Court here in Phoenix and I’m definitely going to vote for him. I saw his poster today by the side of the road as I was driving by and the poster convinced me. I don’t know John Rogers personally. I know nothing about John Rogers. I have no idea if I agree or disagree with anything John Rogers believes or doesn’t believe. I know nothing of his background or credentials. All I know is that he is a man with a poster by the side of the road who wants me to vote for him just as all the other “poster children” by the side of the road want me to vote for them. John Rogers looks like a very nice man. He is barely smiling which, I believe, is the look a Judge should have. Not a hair is out of place and, while he is wearing a tie with a white shirt, he is not wearing a suit coat. I want my Judges to be serious, but I don’t want them to be unapproachable. Without his suit coat, John Rogers looks approachable. On the poster with him are two children, a boy and a girl. John Rogers has his right arm around the shoulders of the boy and his left arm around the shoulders of the girl. These children have very nice smiles and great teeth. I don’t know if they are actually his children. But a Judge should take care of his children’s teeth. I’m going to vote for John Rogers because these children obviously brush and must even floss to get such great looking teeth. There is a woman in the poster behind John Rogers with her hand on his shoulder. I assume this woman is his wife, but could be his mistress. Or she could simply be some woman recruited for the picture. Perhaps the children actually belong to this woman. I have no idea. But she is looking adoringly at John Rogers. Any man who is so adored by a woman is the Judge for me. Evidently, many candidates want you to vote for them because they look good on a poster. Many candidates want you to vote for them simply because they look good. In fact, the attempt to look good and avoid looking bad is what political campaigns are all about and the candidate who looks “least bad” while spending the most money gets elected. Now that’s a poster I’d like to see: Vote for me. I’ve been bought by the best.

The third is dogs and their welfare. I am the author of "Everyone Wins! That just about sums it up! Couch potatoes, which seems to be what far too many people are, are all eye candy junkies. They will buy fast food because it looks good in the pictures on the menu yet they won't complain when what is delivered bears no resemblance at all because they are eating what their eyes told them to buy NOT what reality tells them is on their plate. It's the same with elected officials.

Great analogy. The food always looks great on the box, doesn't it? Thanks.
I'm glad that you are not serious! For a minute there I thought that you'd lost all of your cats eyes (marbles that is).

Thanks for commenting, Laraine. A few more of these road side posters and I might very well lose whatever mind I have left.
Ha! True true true...

Sadly true, James. Thanks for commenting.
